September Soup

Last Saturday was chilly, so I made a pot of soup. Into it went the usual kitchen-y bits and bobs: leftover chicken and stock; the tail end of a summer squash from the farm up the road; red sweet pepper ditto; onion and garlic (fresh); carrot (flabby); a few lonely leaves of leftover spinach; tomatoes off the vine chopped whole and tossed in regardless, peel, seeds and all. Some salt and pepper and cayenne and nutmeg. A handful of fresh rosemary and thyme from the pots in the porch.

September soup carries a certain nostalgia. Filled with the harvest of warm-weather gardens, it gleams with the last lingering glory of summer sun. Poised on the cusp of two seasons, it celebrates them both.

A good way to mark the first day of fall and bid farewell to summer.

  2. Looks lovely! I don't actually like soup, mind, but I admire it aesthetically and economically :-D.

    1. I know just what you mean by admiring something aesthetically without actually liking it. Well put! :)

    1. It's an easy habit to form - especially if you keep stock around. Thanks Beth! :)

  4. Our family also shared a big pot of soup on the first day of fall. No flabby carrots tho' - this time! Roasted veggies - carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, V & O, seasonings, garlic and herbs from the garden then lentils added to chix stock with coarsely chopped roasted veggies. YUM! Your soup looks delicious!

    1. Yours sounds wonderful. V&O has me puzzled - what is it? (Or what are they?)

      Thanks, Sue. :)

    1. I rather liked it myself - and was hoping no one expected a recipe.

Keep plugging away at Blogger. In a few months you'l hardly remember what the old interface looked like. :)

    1. Dang, I knew there was something missing!

(I think I have added PB to soup at least once before - and definitely to sauces.)

    1. Funny but I always seem to put on weight this time of year. Storing up fat for the cold, maybe. :)
