Saturday Sunset Walk

The Autumn Cold struck this week. (I get one cold every fall - do you?) This one settled in my ears and for a few days I was horribly dizzy every time I moved my head. (A good excuse to sit still and crochet.)

~ ~ ~

By Saturday afternoon the vertigo has decreased enough for me to take my camera for a walk. The air is crisp, and clouds are scudding across a windy autumn sky.

The marshy lake-around-the-corner shines silver under peach-tinted clouds:

Cattails stand shivering in the last rays of the sun...

...which is just low enough to cast a reddish glow on this telephone pole and the trees behind it:

The rain and winds of the last week have swept most of the leaves off the trees. A bare oak stands out stark and black against the soft-coloured sky:

Tiny grasses hold up miniscule seeds:

To the west are silos under lavender and rose clouds:

Meanwhile, a half-moon rises in the east.

"Where did August go?" asks a yellow dandelion at my feet.

"I don't know, but I think we should have gone there too," replies the white dandelion (which dressed up as a snowball for Halloween and forgot to take off its costume).

Across the field and around the next pond, a pine cone nestles in a fallen cluster of needles:

The wind is sharp in my face, and it's time to turn for home.

A gorgeous sunset walk - but oh, how cold it seems! We're on the downhill slide to winter.

  1. Hello, Sue!
As usual, your photos steal my heart... I know it is a little sad that you are heading to winter already, but it is also good to have different seasons :) I miss it so much in India!
I loved the pictures of the sunset... the last one with tree outline.. it somehow makes me dreamy...

  3. Just for the record, Sue, your blog is not the least bit soporific for me. I find it exciting to view the world with you, visually, and through your narrative that often encourages me to smile :) Although I am not responsible for the new baby in our household, or the two guests that are here to delight and help us out, or the couple that have moved in due to their need for emergency housing, my routine is in flux and I have just now caught up on your last few posts. I am cheering you on with your, writing, photography, crochet designing and tutorials, (as well as your cycling :) Your posts are a gift to me, and I hope you will be rewarded not only by more fan comments like mine, but financially rewarded through publishing more articles, and books as well!

PS. I love the look of the stretchy star stitch and am eager to try it out...sigh...better time management needed!

  5. Wisconsin is such a beautiful state, I miss the late Autumn light, the cat tails and the change in the landscape. But I seriously do not miss the biting cold. Before you take Tallulah out, she needs a coat, she doesn't want to get a cold, too.
Hope you are feeling better my friend, rest, rest and rest.
    Hugs,
    Meredith

  6. Heading down to winter here too. We have had a few hard frosts now but still a lot more leaves than you! The autumn/winter sky colours are just wonderful though and you have captured them beautifully. Hope you are properly well again now. Juliex

  8. But, I'm sure you will capture the most BEAUTIFUL winter pictures.

I don't get much of a winter. I will have to live vicariously through your photos.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  9. Lovely pictures Sue, glad to hear your cold is getting better, you are so brave to venture out into the cold when you are feeling unwell, but I know once you get out there the walk itself is a tonic, if I was surrounded in beautiful scenery like yourself I might too be tempted. :)

  10. Such lovely soft burnished colours in your images here. We have icy winds blowing here today and I've just tucked up all my balcony plants for winter!
