Chips and Cheese for Dinner, or, Confessions of a Less-than-Perfect Eater

Yesterday I posted some lovely photographs of basil, fresh veggies, and the extremely healthy lunch they became.

Today I am here to confess that I don't always eat like that. Sometimes when I come home from work (particularly on Wednesday nights), I just want to have:

Colby-Jack cheese melted to creamy-chewy perfection
on a bed of tortilla chips

Why this hankering after the crispy, the fatty, the fried? I could try blaming my parents, who restricted our childhood chip-consumption to Thanksgiving and New Year's (those high holy football-watching days), and occasional trips to the beach in summer. Perhaps I'm compensating for some sense of deprivation, or - better still - have come to equate the eating of chips with holidays, sunshine, and freedom from restraint.

It would be easy to pass the dietary buck. But I'm a grown woman, and I make my own decisions. And sometimes I choose to enjoy chips-and-cheese for dinner. It's quick, it's delicious, and - I admit - feels delightfully self-indulgent. (To assuage any stray pangs of nutritional guilt, I add a raw carrot or a salad on the side. Also I kid assure myself that cheese is a good source of calcium and protein.)

What is your favourite less-than-healthy meal? Do tell. : )

  1. Cheetos - easier and faster than your "recipe" plus no energy consumption! Good dark chocolate with mint filling for dessert ;-) I feel my buttons popping now!

  2. During winter I have half a panetone for lunch sometimes.
Or yesterday, we went to Duffy's in Weinfelden (it's a village that wants to be a little town). I had a hamburger with less than a quarter of a leaf of the smallest salad and three tiny pieces of cucumber in it. This is funny because yesterday morning a student asked me very seriously wether I ate as much veggies (a third of the amount of all my food) as I should. Of course I told him I tried to do so. :-)

    1. Mr. M loves panetone. Your lunch story is a funny one - we all kid ourselves about vegetable intake. :)

  3. Yum! I'm afraid I have too many likes in the less-than-healthy section of foods. Since going to Turkey on holiday 14 years ago I have begun a love affair with mayonnaise on chips (fries)....to be honest it's the tip of the iceberg!

  4. Fish Finger sandwiches - white bread with lots of butter....yum!

  5. Fishcakes on toast - not the nice fat, homemade type of fishcake, no the cheap kids style ones. Only hint of veg on the plate is tomato ketchup, lashings of it! (I'm also a fan of fishfinger sandwiches like Penny.

  7. Well since we are talking about not so well things to eat for dinner or supper....how about breakfast?....my stepson birthday was the day before yesterday and we bought him not just a normal chocolate chip cookie cake....we bought the one that is double layered and stuffed! Yes....that is what I am eating for breakfast...talk about a major sugar rush! Love the fact you have cheese and chips for supper to...we do that also.We make a run to our local Mexican restaurant and just order that to go! shame on me...but we do!
Have a great day! Shari ")

    1. Oh yes, less than healthy breakfasts are perfectly acceptable here. :)

  8. Being Irish I have to say potatoes in every form, French Fries, baked with butter, sliced and sauted in butter, mashed with butter and gravy, hash browns, potato chips. In Ireland the restaurants always give you 2 servings of potatoes with every meal.

  9. Oh, where to begin?
How about my thrice yearly can of Vienna sausages for breakfast, or beer battered fish...from the freezer at the grocery store? Layered bean dip which chips, anyone?

    1. Really those don't sound too bad. Beer battered fish is a winner here. :)

  10. Icecream! Yes I know that's not a meal, but I still can't chew because of this jaw problem and ice cream slips down a whole lot easier than salad!

Here in the UK a lot of pups offer what we call chips and you call fries covered in melted cheese ... heart attack on a plate! But very tasty. All things in moderation seems to me to be the way to go :)

    1. Exactly. And I'd have ice cream for dinner MUCH more often if I weren't lactose intolerant. (Somehow the cheese doesn't bother me.) :)

  12. My mother used to give us a bowl of popcorn for Sunday supper. She would always apologize, but we loved it. We munched it while watching Wild Kingdom and The Wonderful World of Disney. The "improper" dinner just feels so good some days!

  13. Too many to count, but chocolate-covered anything is high on the list. :) I also love to stuff mango cheese in my face with nothing else. Just the cheese. I can go through an expensive brick of it in just one sitting!!!

I love, love, love nachos, and I adorn mine with my own peppers. :) Once a New Mexican, always a New Mexican. Ha ha!

    1. Funny but I never thought to call them nachos until after the post was published. Yes, they're wonderful with peppers.

Mango cheese? That's a new one on me.
