Frosty but Kindly

Everything moves more slowly in the cold, including me. (Perhaps that's why I haven't posted anything for over a month?)

~

December was decidedly cold and satisfyingly snowy. Every weekend seemed to feature some kind of extreme weather, delaying my annual trip to the Christmas tree farm until the Thursday just before Christmas. Which was cutting it pretty fine.... (ba-dum-bump)

I found a good tree, though. Some bad fairy had disguised it as a not-so-good tree by stealing a large chunk of branches from around its midsection, but the Magic Glove of Perspective revealed its true potential.

Magic Glove of Perspective in action

A cut about 3 feet from the ground, a little judicious trimming, and we had ourselves a beautiful tree. And since we put it up so late I can keep it up until the end of January without feeling guilty. Maybe even into February. I do like having a Christmas tree. :)

January (so far) has been icy and damp and rainy and foggy and snowy. And icy again. A messy, slippery month, more conducive to hibernation and quiet indoor pursuits than to any outside endeavour. Just writing about it makes me want to take a nap.

But there have been moments of beauty...

...and of celebration too, when a certain family member turned 90 this month. He's always loved airplanes, so we took him out to breakfast at a restaurant with a view we knew he'd enjoy (the food was great too):

January's been busy on the crochet front as well. Some magazine projects have already been completed and mailed, with more in the pipeline. I'm looking forward to lots of yarny adventures this year.

2016 was pretty stressful, and I was relieved to see it go. But the year ended better than it started, with much to be thankful for: the return to health of a very sick family member, an enjoyable new job to replace the one I lost, an amazing vacation in which some treasured online friendships went "live", and a flood of new ideas and new creativity. I'm hoping for great things in 2017.

A belated but very hearty Happy New Year to you all!

How's 2017 been going for you?

  1. That sounds much like our Dec/Jan. We have about 3 feet of snow in our yard and it's snowing again now. Fog and ice predicted the rest of the week. Ick. I have, however, done much knitting/crocheting. That's my ray of sunshine.
    Blessings,

  2. Happy New Year to you Sue. I say keep that tree as long as you like. I like the idea of having one year round and changing up the decorations monthly. It's been my plan to have a twig tree that I crochet monthly decorations for but so far I've not followed through. We don't have ice and snow, but I sure do feel cold living in a concrete building with no insulation and no central heat. Even my husband acknowledges this year that it is dang cold in our apartment. Both my college boys came back during their winter breaks. One is in Colorado and one in Upstate NY so neither of them thought it was cold. They were running around with short sleeves and thought my layers of clothing and socks was ridiculous. :) Happy crocheting! Sending warm wishes your way, Tammy

  3. Sue, I love your snowy quiet views. It has been so so gloomy. Saturday's sun was welcome. I'd welcome fresh snow and blue skies. Are you in Wisconsin??????

  4. How wonderful that you were able to celebrate your Dad's 90th, my husband would love that view too. Missed you blogging, but life definitely interferes sometimes. I think I'd keep a Christmas tree up all year long if I could, love the colors.

  7. Happy B-lated birthday wishes for your Dad. So awesome that he got to have a great view while celebrating. Love your winter pics. As soon as I saw that tree, I thought it needed to be cut where the missing branches were. It's "not a bad little tree, it only needed a little love". :) I look forward to seeing what you design for 2017, I know it's going to be a very creative year! Blessings always. :)

  8. Thanks so much for your beautiful post, showing wintery days around you, and Happy Birthday to your Dad, Sue! I am so glad you landed a job you are enjoying, as well as continuing your designing and publishing career. We have a few mounds of snow left in the yard and the ponds are still ice covered, but today was mostly sunny which I relished. Wishing you and yours many blessings this year. xx
