Looking Up

The weather here has been a real rollercoaster of late. For two weeks in a row we've gone from comparatively warm days (complete with birdsong, nestbuilding, flyovers by geese and blackbirds, and even a robin-sighting), to heavy snowstorms (some with bonus ice!), to rain. Rinse and repeat. I rejoice at the snow, marvel at the birds, and am unenthusiastic about the rain as it turns everything to muddy slush, but there's no doubt that spring is putting out tentative feelers, testing winter's strength, and teasing us all with hints of an early thaw.

Today is of the grey-and-rainy variety, but yesterday was gloriously blue-skied and sunny - perfect for an afternoon walk. Clouds and contrails made a dramatic backdrop to the trees and fields:

A half-moon floated above bare branches:

In the intervals of looking up, I couldn't help snapping photos of dried wildflowers (the ruling passion). These looked like little brown mop heads:

Goldenrod stood guard along the trail:

And horsemint on a snowy bank:

Above the flowers, a hawk wheeled and swooped:

At one corner of the field, a venerable chestnut bore fuzzy buds:

On the far opposite corner, another hawk (or perhaps the same one?) alighted on a telephone pole:

Overhead were more contrails, like giant lacy scribbles across the sky:

Time to turn westward, where the sinking sun was caught in the branches of a favorite oak:

Then home to an early supper and an evening of crochet.

How is your weather? Any surprise snow lately?

  1. Hi, Sue! I loved your description " lacy scribbles across the sky!" Your photos are beautiful. I saw the same half-moon during the day here in Hawaii. May spring come very soon and stay in your area!

  2. I have watched the weather in amazement, the storms in California, the heavy snows in the West and Midwest.... We have also had ups and downs but the last day in February seemed to top it all! It was sunny and 80 degrees! It set a record. Your snowy photos and descriptions are lovely, as always. Dear Sue, keep on keeping on. And keep showing us the beauty! xx

    1. Thanks Kay! I grew up in SoCal, not far from the coast, and we did on very rare occasions get snow there in winter. So it's not completely unprecedented, but I don't think we ever got several inches in one throw.

  3. Oh! Look at The Guardian's article about crochet patterns by a...oh what do you call it, done by a bot? It's pretty funny!

    1. I saw that. Someone on Ravelry asked it to generate a hat pattern for them, and the results were pretty hilarious. It still takes a human to write a good pattern. :)

  5. Winter and spring in a mix as if the saison could not decide what to be. Like a teenager, neither fish nor bird. Temperature ups and downs are exhausting. But, the blue sky definitely looks more beautiful in March than in January. That's a start. xxx Regula

    1. I love to watch the changes in the sky as winter turns to spring. Today we have a fresh dusting of snow, but I don't think it will last long. Come on spring!

    1. I was thinking yesterday (riding home in 91° weather) that in the depths of winter all I want is to be warm. And now I'm getting my wish! So I'm trying to be positive about the heat. It will be autumn before we know it!
