What to Do on a Really Cold Sunday

by Sue Perez, age (ahem)

~ ~ ~

Zest an orange...

...and spend a happy minute sniffing your fingertips before washing off the heavenly scent.

Use the zest to make Orange Scones (with chocolate chips).

Bake the scones and add Orange Frosting. (This is known as Painting the Lily, or, Almost Too Much of a Good Thing.)

Chop and sauté savoury stuff - onions and peppers for starters...

...then add broccoli and eggs and cream and cheese and herbs and salt and pepper. Put the whole thing in the oven to bake. (Frittata, if you haven't guessed.)

While frittata bakes, make coffee and tea. When frittata is done, slice and introduce it to the scones.

Scone, meet Frittata. Frittata, meet Scone.
(Oh, sorry, Ham - you know Frittata and Scone, don't you?)

Enjoy with coffee and tea and a Loved One.

After eating, play with yarn while Loved One washes the dishes (bless him).

An hour or two later, get up to check the thermometer and make sure it's still too cold for a walk.

Then, as long as you're up, make another cup of tea and have another scone.

Repeat as necessary. :)

Orange-Chocolate Chip Scones with Orange Frosting (adapted from this recipe) ~ Oven 400°

1 cup flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup chilled butter, cubed
1 egg
Buttermilk (or milk substitute with a bit of vinegar added)
Zest and juice of 1/2 orange (save other half of orange for frosting)
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Combine dry ingredients in food processor. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chocolate chips. Place zest and juice from 1/2 orange in measuring cup; add buttermilk to equal 1/2 cup. Stir in egg. Add to dry ingredients and pulse briefly to combine. Turn onto floured surface and knead briefly. Flatten into 8" circle; cut into 8 wedges. Bake 20 minutes; let cool slightly; frost with Orange Frosting.

Orange Frosting:

1 Tablespoon butter, melted
1 cup powdered sugar
Zest of remaining 1/2 orange

Combine ingredients in bowl. Gradually add juice from remaining 1/2 orange to desired consistency. (I like to make the frosting thick, so it doesn't run off the hot scones.)

  2. I put on woollen socks made by a very dear little friend of mine. They are warm and cozy, they warm my heart and make every "boo-boo" go away.

  3. Problem is with our changeful weather I'd have to keep checking the temp and eating another Scone. It is mild here...but we have a coal fire at the end of the day to warm up with....it is something to look forward to. Yummy looking recipe!

  4. That sounded like the kind of day I like, food, wool and warmth.
I am new to your blog but am already looking forward to your posts this year.

  5. Yum!

Gosh, you really do have the life don't you! Any man that will wash dishes is a keeper!

It's zero here today and we lost power for two and half hours...which wasn't fun, but I am thawing back out again now that it's back on Yay!

Blessings always and oh yeah...might as well get another scone while you're at! :)

  6. Your scones sound and look delicious. Stay warm up there, it looks awfully cold in Wisconsin. We're going down to the teens tonight and that's way colder than I care to deal with.

  9. Sue, you make me smile! I would include my age but not my weight after eating food as yummy as yours! We are F.R.I.G.I.D here so I have been mopping up the drips from the frosty window sills, drinking tea and putting away holiday. Good thing work was cancelled today so I could keep up with these tasks. Thanks for sharing your delicious looking meal with recipe! Stay warm!

  11. Boy, have you ever made me drool this time!

I stayed warm by pedaling uphill in a snowstorm. Heh, heh, heh!

  12. Sounds perfect to me. I love to make frittatas, the combinations are endless. I had to chuckle at checking to see if it's still too cold to take a walk because I do that too. :)

  13. When I had bus duty in the winter at the elementary school where I worked back in NY I had a long puff coat with a hood. I called it my Darth Vader coat. Gloves, jumping up and down a lot and chattering "Brrr It's cold!!!!!!" helped me survive :) Staying inside cooking and consuming wonderful food as you described in your post above, Sue, is a far superior method of staying warm! xx

  14. All I can say is "MMMMMMM!" and sniff my fingertips -- oh wait, no orange zest. I'd best get to the store and buy some oranges as these just sound yummy (and sniffy good too).

  16. Ha-ha! :) Happy New Year Sue! I don't do dairy products anymore but everything sure sounds good. I do hope the weather calms and clears soon. Yusef heads back to Colorado early, early Friday morning. He's already not looking forward to the long flight, so I hope he doesn't encounter any delays along the way. Wishing you all the best for 2014. Tammy

  17. We had a wet Sunday but quite warm. Altthoug I needed a hat due to wind. Today it is warm, like spring. I'm positive that there are freezing and snowy days ahead though. Therefore I don't get to excited ... :-) You seem to do okay in the cold. I'd like to have a scone with you!

  18. Peanuts. Why do you keep asking these questions? :)

  19. Wash clothes, dust only one room, read blogs, write blogs, walk our beagle, bag up the garbage, watch tv, wash endive and arugula I saved before the freeze, play Candy Crush, check my mom's Facebook, start planning a family trip to Italy, and ... The day is not over. In fact it is only 4:30pm. The life of a retired teacher! (sigh) Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  20. We're very spoiled here. Our cold ends by Thursday. It'll be back in the 60's by the end of the week! Love these scones though. I may just have to try them!

  21. Orange and chocolate: a favorite combo. Reminds me of the chocolate orange sticks I would purchase while working at a drugstore when I was sixteen. Oh and that frittata, yum! Stay warm my dear friend. :-)
