Looking Up

Just as everyone was beginning to feel desperate, the weather finally moderated. From a depressing 18 below on Tuesday night, we have climbed to the giddy upper 30s during the last few days. This, combined with some sunnier-than-forecast weather, means that the white stuff is now melting in earnest. Patches of muddy ground are beginning to appear; the sidewalks are awash, and dirty piles of snow line the streets.

Which is one reason I spent Sunday's walk looking upward. It's much more beautiful above than below at the moment.

The church on the corner stands serenely under a pale spring sky:

The trees are no longer bare-knuckled:

Ever the opportunists, they have seized the 40° day and are budding out like crazy.

Even the pines have put on gladness, and are shooting off little green fireworks for joy that spring is near.

Things are definitely looking up.

Check out our weather forecast for the next few days:

If the weatherman is right, I see a bike ride in my very near future. (I shall ignore the dark and snowy end of the photo and concentrate on that one bright blue square to the left.)

Yes, things are definitely looking up.

  2. I have sunshine pouring in through my window this morning and the weather is positively mild for the time of the year. I may even do some gardening later on. I hope you manage to get your bike out and that threatened snow never materialises :)

  6. Cold and foggy here in southwest Louisiana. I need to do some yard work this week before we fly across the "puddle" to check on our apartment project. Our Dutch friends have had far better weather this winter than we have had down here (or you have had up there). Enjoy biking this week! Hope all your paths are clear. Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  7. We saw a huge sea turtle in the Keys and I thought of your sweet bike riding turtle. THen we had a pretend turtle in our condo at the top of the stairs…I talked to him.. Guess I missed my cats!

  8. OH, I feel your pain. Every time it warms up here it turns cold again, but NOTHING like what you're dealing with. Enjoy your ride.

  10. Crazy .....hot one day, cool the next. We could really use a bit more rain, but I'll enjoy the sun while we have it.

    Enjoy that bike ride.

  12. It's been delightfully sunny here in the UK, although very wet underfoot still.

I'm kinda sad that I need to actively wish for the cold weather to stay away ... you know how much I love frost and snow but below zero temps now would be devastating to the new plant and animal life that's emerging.

I do hope it continues to warm up under blue skies where you are x

  15. It's so clearly Wisconsin! Yesterday, people had their car windows all the way down--as though we had to drink in all the fresh air and sunshine that we could in one day! ...and then snow this afternoon. Oh well. Yesterday gave us hope that it won't be long. =)

  17. Sue...even though I'm opposite of most and it's the lower temps and the snow that bring me smiles, I am glad that you're enjoying these little hints that spring is most certainly just around the corner. It's the arrival of fall that makes my heart feel as yours does now!! xo

  18. We are lucky! We have had lovely weather, sunny all day. Of course there is still a cold wind from the north most of the time, but if you sit in the shade it is quite nice. Last year the weather was awful. So I am amazed how nice it is this year. I am very thankful!!!!!!!! Enjoy every sunny day. Regula

  19. Yesterday, in Middle England, the temperature rose to a beautiful 16C. The trees are just starting into leaf and blossom, Daffodils, Primula and Hyacinth are all smiling in the sun. I wish you the very same thing Sue.
