Out the Kitchen Window

Standing at the kitchen sink this morning,
waiting for the water to warm,
I looked out the window and saw
the waning moon
floating in a pale blue sky
and wreathed with gauzy clouds.

The Very Tall Tree that lives next door
was bowing to the boisterous wind
and scattering leaves like yellow confetti.

Across the wedge of sky
flew a small squadron of geese.
"Summer's gone," they called as they passed.

They disappeared behind the garage roof,
taking a perfect moment with them*.

Do you have a kitchen window? What do you see from it?

~

*As with most perfect moments, there was no time for photos. But when my hands were dry I walked outside and snapped a bit of the leafy confetti:

  1. The poem is nice!!! well, we have a kitchen window too and I see our green citrus tree and a little bit of sky when I look out. Also I can see my tiny garden and a house behind the wall.

  2. What a lovely view you have from your kitchen window. I could imagine it all when I read your poetic words!
Yes, I have a kitchen window, in fact they are doors made of glass. What I see through these windows is the building opposite mine! Not poetry inspiring at all, that is why I love the summer because I fill my balcony full of plants and flowers and I forget, just a little, that I'm a town dweller!
    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Thanks Sandra. In fact the garage takes up most of the view ... but I can still see the sky and one tree. :)

  3. Would those same geese be winging their way to the large ponds next to our house? Maybe they were saying, 'off to see Faith'

Out through my kitchen window I can see scaffolding, but having ventured outside today to drop biggest boy to a cub hike, it is a gloriously crisp, cold, sunny day....perfect autumn weather.

    1. I think my geese are the American cousins of your geese ... their honking had a distinct Midwestern twang, rather nasal in fact. :)

  4. I can see the mountains and, funnily enough, I took pictures from my windows as the sun rose this morning dispelling the mist. I'll perhaps publish them sometime. Joan
    PS Love your poetic writing

  6. Beautiful! Evocative! Lovely word picture!

Remember back, when people read? :-) And thus, relied on the words, to paint pictures in their minds? Perhaps blogging is detrimental to the art of Just Reading?

Ya' know, how I and so many people just *HAVE TO* have a pic or 3 or 5, with every post? I'm as *guilty* as anyone. -sigh-

But then, I can't conjure up such delightful word pictures... That's my excuse and I'm *stickin'* with it. -grin-

But THANK YOU, for sharing YOUR ability, with us!!!!!!!!

    1. Honestly the only reason I added a pic was for the LinkWithin gadget - otherwise there's just an odd symbol above the post name. Not very inviting!

      And thank you.

  7. Out my kitchen window over the sink.... The pool, the pool fence, with grape vines all over it... Side of neighbor's garage, as we live on a corner, and I look out at the "other" street. :-) But thankfully, the grape arbor and trees/bushes/etc. hide most of the garage. A garage is not a pretty view.

And when I keep a lot of the rogue growth cut back, I can see down the "other" street. And the front yards of neighbor's who live down the "other" street. I didn't cut them, this spring so my view is nil But I plan on remedying this soon! :-)

Well, if the weather ever cooperates, that is. :-)

    1. Our garage is not the prettiest either. But the sky above redeems it. :)

  8. What a beautiful image you have woven with your words. Such skill!
I don't think anyone would envy my kitchen window view. Whoever designed this house was nuts. I look out to the carport, of all things! It has come in handy in years gone by when we raised pigs. I could see when the little darling piglets had escaped the barn. They would run like the wind and I swear each one had a twinkle in their eye and a smile on their face. Somewhat annoying, but none the less hysterically funny.

    1. Well, pigs are better than nothing....

(especially if they have a twinkle in their little piggy eyes)

  9. I have windows surrounding my kitchen table, they look out on my pool and the woods behind my house. I love the trees, watching them sway in the breeze. I love how the sunlight filters downs between them as it moves across the sky.
I love to see the deer, hawks, owls and an occasional wild turkey walk behind my house.
    Hugs,

My view through the kitchen window is filled with blue hills, clouds scudding across the sky, green paddocks, farmland sheep and cattle. A full dam, oak trees in the distance which give us beautiful Autumn colour .Haysheds, water tanks, so many thing, I love our view and count my blessings every day.....

  11. Out my kitchen window I see the neighbor's house. Way too close. Luckily the fron and back of my house have better views. I have lots of pretty yellow leaves on my lawn right now.

  12. Out of the kitchen window I see an always green hedge, two birches and two willows, a cherry tree and my neighbour's wooden garage. The hedge is very high now so I don't see what's behind it, like the meadow with the apple trees and the forest about half a mile away. I cannot look out of the window when I stand at the sink. :-(

    1. Wow, lots of trees in your view! In our last two apartments I didn't have a window over the sink, so I really appreciate this one.

  13. That is a lovely poem. My kitchen window looks out on our privacy balcony, so I have plants there, and often the doves will come to visit. :) There's no Fall happening around here. Still feels like summer. :/ Hope you are having a great weekend. Tammy

  14. Kitchen window view = herb garden, metal leaf shaped seed and water feeders, humming bird feeder, thistle sock and neighboring low rock wall that is home to the ground squirrels (so cute but sometimes destructive!). Our kitties enjoy the same view from the french door nearby = Kitty Cat Drive-in. Thank you for sharing and asking that question. I've been looking at that view for 10 yrs, not giving it extra thought; it's a wild kingdom out there and we enjoy it!

  15. My view from my kitchen window, a field with oak trees, neighbors dogs come to gather daily to play, the old wooden fence that runs along side my home over looking the public park in the distance. Thanks for asking about what we see....this is a very lovely post and made me stop and take in all the simple things today! Shari.

p.s. my new blog is up and running if you haven't seen already, I hope you continue to follow me there as I love to read all of your post.

  16. I see my car on the short drive in front of my house, because my kitchen is at the front. And beyond that, across the narrow little road that leads to just three more houses and is always empty of traffic, I see a field hedge and the tops of the maize in the field behind it. And further still a line of hedgerow trees that blaze orange in autumn, and froth with white blossom in summer.

But I have discovered, from various conversations I've had with my cousin's husband's family (he's from Arizona), that most Americans would probably imagine all this on a larger scale than is in fact the case. You have so much land over there!

  17. Hi Sue
Your view sounds rather mesmorising in comparison to mine. I look out onto my little courtyard of potted plants with the occasional birdy visitor. My potted apple tree is my favourite to watch it change each season, it actually boretiny little rather sour apples this year! I do love the leaf confetti of autumn xox Penelope

  20. What a beautiful description. What a way with words that you have.
From my kitchen window I can see a golden Japanese maple whose branches are spilling over the edge of the patio wall. There is also a beautiful wooden arch that my husband built that is covered the large white flowers of Autumn Climatis. The kid's swing is swaying gently in the breeze and looking lonely without it's playmates.
Thank you for giving the great advice for my lace shrug over my dress that you left on my blog. Very greatful.

  21. My kitchen window is far too small. But I do have a very nice view of the nearby foothills. And my container garden on the porch. And sometimes I even hear geese overhead, just like you!
