A Handful of Summer

What the Midwestern gardener dreams about through the long cold days of winter:

The first harvest of fresh tomatoes. Mine are tiny grape tomatoes - living garnets nestled with fresh basil, the king of herbs. (Hobnobbing with culinary royalty is what fresh tomatoes do best.)

What to do with this rare and precious gift? Eat it for breakfast.

Happy Summer.

  1. Nothing better than fresh food from the garden. Our basil is still doing well but the tomatoes have really slowed down.

    1. Bring on the fresh mozzarella! They're also very good with goat cheese....

  3. My basil turned yellow during Ride the Rockies, and I haven't planted new yet... My tomato vines were prolific, but only with leaves. I have one tomato, still on the vine, and all the rest is just vine and leaves, no buds. ?!?

But yesterday my employer hosted a client function, and the leftovers were presented to us. Fresh mozzarella with fresh tomato slices and fresh basil leaves. Stuffed grape leaves. Olives. I was so in heaven!
